Boiler Advice needed

Hi All
Would really appreciate any advice people have!!!
Bought a house in Jul- only 8 years old- and our boiler was installed 5 and a half years ago. With this cold snap we were having issues with the heating so British Gas came to have a look. Basically so many issues that they have labelled the boiler 'At Risk'- there was a leak inside the boiler and the display panel is shorted out, which basically means they can't be 100% sure what the issue is but the corrosion is easily obvious so chances are we spend that couple hundred quid on the panel the error message we'll get is a bad one.
It's an Icos boiler, notoriously bad apparently.
My question is, do boilers normally foul up like this after less than six years? We're checking our insurance options but does anyone have any thoughts on where we stand? We really can't afford a new boiler at this time
Thanks for reading xo

If the boiler came with a 7 year warranty, you might be able to get it repaired under warranty. I don't think you'd get a 7 year warranty on an Icos though.
If you've got boiler breakdown cover, you ought to be covered by that. You won't be covered under standard household insurance though.
British Gas are notoriously bad for finding expensive "faults" with boilers. I would look for a second (and ideally third) opinion. Don't, under any circumstances, pay British Gas to fix the boiler until you've had someone else look at it.0 -
Thanks Eric! Yes- we thought we'd get quotes from British Gas and also from a couple of other engineers to see where we're at. We do have boiler breakdown but the amount we get would make only a small dent in the cost of a new boiler...!
Will check out the boiler warranty too...
