Best car insurance for a teenager, just passed test?

Hi,
My 19 yr old son has just passed his driving test :j

He saved up last year to buy a S-reg Micra, which to be honest is probably only worth £180.

We're trying to find the best car insurance for him but virtually every quote we've found are stating monthly premiums of more than the actual car is worth!

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also, he's at college but has a part-time job (local supermarket) 0 which would give the better quote, saying he was a student or a shop assistant?

Thanks

  • Sorry to break it to you, but every insurance premium with his experience and age will be more than the car is worth.

I paid £1300 for my first with a black box, the car was £1000 to me, likely worth £700.

Paying monthly is also more expensive than yearly, just to note.

there is an article here > http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/car-insurance/young-drivers
The value of the car has little to do with it....a £180 car can cause £1,000s of damage to an expensive car in the same way a more expensive car could

The biggest factors will likely be picking Fully Comprehensive insurance and adding yourself (and spouse/partner if applicable) onto the policy as a responsible third party.

Playing about with the Job description might help; but you can test that by plugging both values into the price comparison sites and seeing what quote they come back with. Or click here.

Whilst looking a little while back i found cars older than 2001 were more costly to insure and some insurers dropped off the results.

Try a quote on an S reg Micra and then a 2001 - 2004 Micra, you may find the newer car is cheaper even though its essentially the same model.
