Now I have a another useless bank account and no £100 Cashback

It's not useless. Just hang on to it until another switching bonus deal comes along!

To be fair though grumbler, if people stopped there (and didn't click the link) they could miss out if they held Cumberland and/or Nationwide building society accounts they wanted to switch. :)
Yes, but my point was that in day-to-day life the difference between banks and BSs is so negligible that when saying"banks" people normally mean "banks and/or BSs".

.. informed after spending an hour opening an account with the Halifax my cashback is disallowed because the Newcastle Building Society is not a member of the 7 day switching service. ..

The switching service is only for current accounts, not for savings accounts. Newcastle Building Society doesn't provide current accounts (at least there's no mention of any on their website), so they couldn't possibly be a member of the 7 day switching service.

Recently moved to first direct for there cashback offer which was on at the time, but the lack of branches in my area has got me thinking about leaving them already.
A lot of people open that account purely to access FD's 6% AER Regular Saver, so consider whether that's worthwhile for you before moving on again. You can still keep most of your money in another bank if you want to.
