Dolly Dream - I could have written your post! Some days I'm so tired when I get in I just sit until it's time for bed! Luckily DH is semi-retired and he cooks every day, or I'd never eat at all. He also does some housework. My Mum used to make comments based on the length of school holidays, or the length of a school day when I was first married, but once she'd stayed with us a bit during term time she realised that maybe the popular conception of a teacher's lifestyle was wrong! Hope you're feeling geared up for the new year!

We have gone minimalist or at least have homes for everything, if you pick up after yourself it's easier to hoover etc. Not saying it's always spotless but we can go from hovel to hotel in 10 minutes LOL. On the ironing front we don't iron much at all, a shake out of the TD gets rid of most creases, just things like linen trousers need a bit of an iron if they are for work.

Modern working mum's don't have time to be as houseproud as their none-working mothers were and it's good to feel that you don't have to be a slave to the housework.

Wow you were brave, I have friends I only see during the holidays and not even my best friend will be phoning me during the first 6 weeks back because I may not be coherent:rotfl:We have a "challenging" year group coming - their infant school were cheering when they left.

I was a late entrant to the profession and I am sure that had social services come round during my PGCE year the children would have been taken into care the house was such a mess. It changed my children's attitude towards teachers though once they realised the amount of work involved. They said that they would never become teachers. However youngest DD is now saying that once she has graduated she may train as she realises that she would enjoy it. :T

Yes I am getting geared up - in this week to make my class look like a classroom again and get the new teachers up to speed - just finishing the final planning for the first couple of weeks and keep taking the vitamins.

Good luck to everyone with housework but especially those teachers out there.

    Hi dolly day dream

But I guess the reason I don't want to spend any more time than I can help on housework is it just plain doesnt interest me. I am interested in cooking - and do a lot of experimenting in that direction. But housework per se - no - I'll do enough to maintain reasonable standards and thats it.

Yes that is me to a T If I wanted to I am sure that my house could be cleaner and tidier but to be frank I would much rather be; sewing, cooking, reading, researching family and local history, creating, using the computer, walking, studying, writing to friends, patchworking, quilting, attempting to garden etc than cleaning. I am trying to achieve a better balance though cos I would hate it if something were to happen to me and my children had to wade through the piles of accumulated 'stuff' I have to sort anything out.
Must be a sign of getting older :o

It's so good to hear from others who dislike housework as much as I do! I do try to keep my kitchen/bathroom clean and tidy (mind you my kitchen floor badly needs a mop!), but the rest is usualy somewhat of a mess. Mind you, most of the mess belongs to my 2 daughters (13 & 15), and I tell them that they are old enough to clear it up themselves - works occasionally!
I am going to try the Flylady routine when I go back to work next week, I tried it a couple of years ago, but have lapsed since then!
  • Does anyone secretly jump for joy when they go to someones house and it is really messy? I have to confess, I do. If I go unexpectedly to someones house and it is in a perfect state I feel completely inadequate and inferior. I could spend a lot longer on housework but there always seems to be more enjoyable things to do- after all none of us has ever been ill from the germs in our house.

Ceridwen, do you have a dishwasher? If not I would recommend getting one. It is somewhere to put the dirty dishes and they come out ready to put away.

Mine was the cheapest John Lewis's do and it has a 'quick' wash that takes 30 minutes and does everything well.

...you see, finding all those links to annoy Hester is time you could put to better use. ;)

    Hi moanymoany
Was wondering where you were - hadnt heard from you for a bit!

Dishwasher - if you'd seen the size of my kitchen! Swing a cat - well I might be able to swing a mouse. No - on second thoughts - I don't do cruelty to animals. I wouldnt say its small - but it wouldnt be wise to try and get more than 2 people at a time in it. I've done an old-style reorganisation of it recently - and various bits have gone up into the loft whilst I contemplate whether to keep them or no, as there isnt room for everything at once in the kitchen.

Well - you get the picture I'm sure.

I'll go back to the drawing board then. I remember in Shirley Conran's Superwoman series of books she laid down a suggested housework programme. Well - I adopted her phrase of "life being too short to stuff a mushroom" - but her programme sounded like a bit of a counsel of perfection to me.

I could say - when I retire then I'll have loads of time to do it all "properly" - but I have lots of interests/hobbies I'm waiting to have more time/some time in the first place for!
