Alternitives to microsoft

With microsoft's increasingly aggressive behaviour I am seeking alternitive operating systems to microsoft.

Any ideas?

Opensuse, but I'm biased.

However for a Linux novice you'd be best off trying out something like Mint LTS or Ubuntu LTS. Run them as a live distro first (no install) and see how you feel about them.

What is it you use the pc for mainly ?

theres plenty of Linux distros around, most have live cd's you can download and try out without effecting your current install.

my choice would be Linux Mint

Whilst there are certainly a growing number of user friendly Linux distros available they won't necessarily be everyone's cup of tea.

Other alternatives are Chromebooks which although they have their limitations, for any one who uses their pc or laptop for general browsing etc they might be worth considering.

Another alternative nowadays is putting a version of Android on your computer. This is possible because it's a linux based operating system but with a now familiar and popular interface. Here's a link to a YouTube how-to using kit kat 4.4 if you are interested.

The options are a flavour of Linux (free but which one do you use?), OSX (need to buy an Apple computer), or ChromeOS (need to buy a Chromebook, can't do everything a traditional OS can do).

Is any software you use only available on Windows? If so are suitable alternatives available on other systems?

I Agree with many of the previous posters..I have used Linux mint since microsoft stopped supporting XP ..There are many forums on tinternet to help you iron out any issues and the linux way of doing things..

I have no intention of going back to the dark side (microsoft)
Its all free over at linux..spend your money on beer instead its the way forward

Purely out of interest, and the question is not intended to start a heated discussion, what behaviour?

If there is something specific that you don't like right now, it might be wise for us to make sure that the next os you opt for does not do the same.

I think the OP is referring to MS constantly trying to get the user to download and install win 10, by stealth.

Quite part from the legion of problems users on here have seen with various things not working under win 10, the OP may have as I do external devices which do not have a win10 driver (and probably never will have).
So MS telling me my PC is suitable is factually incorrect and in effect they are trying to prevent me from using my computer by trying to introduce an update which will turn it into a useless brick when this external device is connected

I like others have hidden and rejected the updates that provide for the win10 download - yet at each MS monthly update - they come back again and we have to remove them from the list again, and again, and again.
I like the OP regard this as aggressive behaviour.

Surely it's a lot less aggravation to simply unistall the upgrade KB update? Thousands of simple to follow guides on google.

True, it can be done but it necessarily simple. For starters you need to make sure you have the correct hardware as it won't work with pretty much anything like Windows or Linux.

For anyone who isn't rather technically inclined and want a don't want a challenge the only way to get OSX is to buy an Apple computer. You are also guaranteed support if you do this.
