Is this enough for a 1 bedroom flat?

Hello all, signed up to asked a question or 3.

Am looking to move out next year into a council home (1 bedroom flat) - Will be first time paying for utilities so want to prepare and plan as much as possible before the move.
I have set aside some figures and am hoping someone from London (I will be living in SE London) might be able to compare?

Electric + Gas (Dual Fuel) - £80 per month
Water - £25 per month

I tend to put on extra layers than put heating on, however I'm a heavy PC user. Just wondering, if £80 a month is not enough?

Thanks all.

  • I used British Gas's estimate/quote

    Flat
    1 bedroom / 1 person
    Use electric all day
    Gas Central Heating
    Gas to heat up water

There are some other variables but BG quotes total estimate cost will be £71.25 a month (£29.58 for gas, £41.66 for electric)

The heating bill will depend on the insulation properties of the flat, but £80 monthly for gas/electricity would seem reasonable; as does £25 for water.

Make sure you get a good company/tariff for gas/electricity. As you don't know your kWh consumption to enter into a comparison website you should estimate - say 12,000kWh gas and 4,000kWh electricity pa.

I've now been in this 2 bedroom modern flat for 7 months and the direct debit has been reduced from £59 to £49 and now to £43 and I'm still in plenty of credit.

The heating only came on a few days ago for the second time this season.

  • Not an exciting present but as Christmas is coming up you could ask for a few LED bulbs for your new home! The light quality is good and for those lights you use a lot they'll save a fair bit in the long run. I even replaced the fluorescent tube in my kitchen which has halved consumption, comes on instantly, has no flicker and is absolutely silent.

For water and wastewater combined in London, I use about £21 a month for two of us. So your £25 should be plenty as long as you have a water meter, although we do have modern toilets that don't use much water so it does depend on your facilities. Gas and elec looks to be plenty as well but do look for the cheapest deal on something like uSwitch. I use GB Energy which is the cheapest for me.
  • Hi there,

I'm in a one bed in south west London/ top of Surrey area.

    I am currently with:

Elec: Ebico @ £20 a month, I use less than £4.50 a week. Works out at £217.77 per year or 1,107 kWh per year

Gas: Zog energy @ £35 a month! I don't have the actual figures to hand. but that is my monthly D/D amount

Water is included in my rent aka service charge your might be too as I'm also in council. Check with you HA.

Heating is on when its cold I've never looked at the button and thought I cannot afford to turn it on.

Also with my Elec I got a £12 Government Electricity rebate today :)

Hope that helps, My top tip is avoid the big 5!

Most people use about 30% of their energy in the seven summer months and 70% of it in the five winter months so I really hope that you are saving some money for when your DD jumps up in March/April when they discover that you've been significantly underpaying and they then want to recover the arrears
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

Watch out for the cheap Chinese ones on ebay.OK the led portion of it may last for 15 years but their resisitors can last for 10 minutes !. I ve tried a batch of 6 , one was dead on arrival, and two packed in after a few weeks. They seem to get good feedback but wont stand the test of time.
Another batch of ten from Home Bargains ( 4 watt small screw candle ) have fared better with only one out of the 10 blowing in a few months..Still better than the pathetic " 8 watt energy bulbs which pop all the time.
