Is it easy to un-install McAfee ?

McAfee 15 month antivirus package has now run out.
I asked, and got advice from you what free antivirus was available, but was advised to un-install McAfee before I could install the free stuff.
Not being a techie, could you advise me in idiot proof language, how to get rid of it please.
I have a Dell desktop with xp media centre.
