My parents' joint account at Lloyds was made sole in my mum's name after my dad died - it did take a while, but in some ways that could be useful as any cheques that arrived in my dad's name after his death could be paid into the account with his name still on it without any questions being raised.

Many thanks. The account is well in credit but I'll discuss with her what she'd like to do. I assume a different bank would be advisable, just in case, if she does decide to open another account?

It's a good idea to have accounts with more than one bank so that you can still access money if one organisation's electronic system goes down.

Although it is a good idea to have accounts at more than one bank, perhaps your mum doesn't want to be running around opening accounts at this time, with your dad being so ill in hospital.

    She's already under great stress.

The chances of 'problems' transferring the account to her sole name when the times comes are very low indeed. Is it worth giving her more stress than she's already having, when the 'risk' is so low?

My mum and dad had a joint account with Co-op, and after my dad died, the transfer to her sole name was very straightforward.
