Of the babyboomers....
Now, I know we like a good babyboomer thread in these parts, and we haven't had one for a while.
Boris Johnson has written in the telegraph that rather than judging babyboomers for all they have...and keep getting, we should look at what they have achieved for our young today.
He qualifies this by saying we have access to far more food. Babyboomers children have access to electronic devices to type these whinges on. Far more go on to university and they are living in the fastest growing most dynamic country in Britain.
So, as he states, they may not have access to generous pensions but have to pay for them. They may not have access to housing as babyboomers built 300,000 homes a year for themselves but then drew up the drawbridge. They may well not have access to every crumb of the welfare state such as their parents did.
But they do have technology and can access food from around the world. For which, apparently, we are to give credit to the babyboomers for.
So, my question is....should we be grateful for technological advances? Sure, we should. But should technological advances be the be all and end all for which we must forever be grateful in the face of everything else like no other generation before us? Afterall, babyboomers too had the joy of technological advances...

Do the Telegraph know what a babyboomer is?
The old dear on the scooter in the photo isn't one.0 -
I reckon having your own place is infinitely preferable to living with your parents in your 20's/30's even..... but having an ipad.0

Young 'to be poorer than parents at every stage of life'

It looks to me like they're using some extremely shaky assumptions. For a start they seem to be ignoring the impact of compulsory retirement savings. That has had a massive impact in Australia where compulsory 'super' contributions mean that Australia is the third biggest asset management market in the world despite only having a population of 23,000,000 plus a few dingos and kangaroos.0 -

You honestly thing the reason we aren't building enough homes is a lack of brick layers and roofers?
Give them somewhere to build them, and they'd easily build 300k house a year0 -

I've reasonable understanding of history. Helps puts matters into perspective. Selectively quoting in the media suggests complete ignorance of the topic. Lazy journalism.0 -
Baby boomers are fine with house building, just as long as it's not near them.
Same goes for job creation through industry etc. Just put it where they can't see it.
Oh and we need to spend more on health now, some of them are getting old.Left is never right but I always am.0 -
