How do I check/reclaim PPI? Unsure if it was sold to me.

Options
Hi all,

I'm currently in the process of trying to see if I had PPI sold to me when I took out credit cards with Mbna, Capital One & Co-Op. How do I check this? Do I just phone them up and they tell me or is it more complicated than that? Also, will they tell me the truth on what is owed to me if I have PPI? Thanks in advance!

Roger.

Check your statements. If you had it, it would appear on the monthly statements.

If you cleared your balance each month then PPI is not normally chargeable as its normally applied against the balance that is not repaid within the interest free period.

Finally, if neither of those apply/possible then phone and ask.
Also, will they tell me the truth on what is owed to me if I have PPI?

No. That is not what you do with PPI. You are not owed anything. There is nothing wrong with having PPI. The whole issue is how it was sold and whether it was sold correctly by their staff members. They will tell you if you had PPI or not but they will not tell you if you are owed anything as there is nothing to owe. You would need to submit a complaint stating why you believe it was mis-sold. Then they will decide if your complaint is valid or not and make a decision from there.

Try the credit agencies (noddle.co.uk is free or use the free trials for Equifax and Experian) - your last 6 years will be on there

Ring the companies up and ask them, simple as that.

If the frontline staff cannot find it you will need to do a DSAR (costs £10 per bank) for a copy of all their records on you - anything over 6 years will be hit and miss as they tend to delete stuff in line with DPA rules after that time

We can't advise you about a complaint (not a claim) as we don't know anything about you. What are your complaint reasons and what evidence do you have?

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
