Best thing to record tv? maybe get films?

Hi I am looking for something that I can add to my tv so I can record certain stuff from the tv when I am not going to be in or watching something else. I have heard of these now tv boxes which say you can watch certain things on cathup but not everything goes onto catch up, We have a really good Sony tv so don't want to go buying a new tv for a hard drive and think sky is pretty expensive, I am looking for a cheaper thing? If there is anything that would also have films that would be a great bonus as Netflix and Love film are poor for film choice.

thanks :)

The Freeview recorder works in the same way as Sky - pause, rewind, record, record one while watching something else, etc - without the subscription.

    See here:

Regarding the films, you've already ruled out the two key options of DVD rental (Lovefilm) and Netflix, and also Sky Movies, so I suspect you may end up just buying films or going to the cinema.

Does your current tv support a usb hard drive ?

many do, you just have to buy it separately, and would be cheaper than getting a separate box if it does.

for films, there are 4 main services, LoveFilm (by post), Amazon Prime, Netflix or NowTV.

NowTV basically offer Sky Movies, but doesn't require you to have Sky and works out cheaper.

I use all of them, and find LoveFilm has the best selection, especially for the recently released films. But its a rental services rather than a streaming one

I think it may as newish and is Sony so quite good, It defo has a usb and hdmi port in the back of the tv, yea it was for more recording the odd programme that my start at bed time and just wanna watch the next day :), yea may look at that for the films, is nowtv a subscription or one off payment for films? someone said about amazon fire but again undecided, just sick of buying dvds all the time to watch.

NowTV has a number of services. The films service is a monthly subscription, which gives you access to Sky Movies, both the live channels and all the on demand stuff. Which is £9.99/month, but if you try to cancel you can often get it for £4.99
