Did you perhaps download the source files by mistake?

This is the one you want (presuming you are using Windows):
    http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

You will need to download and install the "GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment" first, then "The Gimp For Windows." If you are new to GIMP (and I guess you are) then you can also download help files from the same page.

Download the first two files listed here, & run them one at time - first the GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment. G

And once you've installed it, you'll find the interface absolutely horrendous.

Don't waste your time and just get Paint.NET instead.

Have you used gimpshop then? I'm very used to photoshop, and every time I look at gimp, I'm with conor... it's horrible to work with.

I'd like a photoshop -like app on one of my other PCs (can't afford more than 1 photoshop licence) and although paint.net is good, there's still odd bits with it that I don't like.

If you're having difficulty installing Gimp then I think GIMP Portable has everything required installed in a single package. It worked as a simple install for me, but that might be because I have had GIMP installed previously - installing it fresh then it might complain it needs something just like the real GIMP.

There's every possibility it is however most of the functionality is buried within an extremely poor GUI and very bad unintuitive menu system so most people give up long before they find everything it has to offer.
