Does a claim under home emergency cover need to be declared as an insurance claim

Hi, I have a renewal for building and contents insurance, did some comparisons and then went to my current insurer to see if they could do better. After discussion they said I had an insurance claim, which I disputed until they told me the date. I realised I had used my Home emergency cover to find a leak in my bathroom (they discovered the bath waste pipe had come loose from the main stack pipe and they had to remove the toilet to get to it). I didnt claim on my main insurance for ceiling damage due to the excess being more than the cost. I thought that home emergency cover didn't have knock on effects as it said my no claims wouldn't be affected, it seems this isn't true as it has been classified as a claim.

My questions when looking on comparison sites or insurers sites are
1. Does this claim need to be declared,
if so
2. How? As it normally is a drop down on content or building insurance and it was neither

Any suggestions would be appreciated

I would agree with your logic and say that you shouldn't need to declare it - the only reason your current insurer is bringing it up is because they already know about it, but I can't see why any other insurer should need to know. But I'm quite prepared to be proved wrong.

You say you didn't claim on the insurance due to the excess being higher than the repair cost - but did you call your home insurer with the intention of claiming, for them to advise you of the excess, then you withdrew the claim? If so, that is still classed as making a claim initially.

You need to read the questions carefully.

Even though you didn't claim, you had an incident or loss under buildings cover - escape of water.
