Intermittent e-mail issue

I've been having some odd problems since yesterday and Plusnet say it isn't because of any fault at their end. I've run every scan I can and to be honest I think my browser has recovered but not my e-mail. I use Outlook Express and I'm intermittently unable to send messages, getting the following error message - I've blacked my name out with x's.

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'xxxxxx xxxxxx', Server: 'relay.plus.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

Has anyone any idea what action I might take to rectify this? Is it caused me a virus or malware or is it an ISP issue in your opinion?

Odd problems like what? (Other than the email obviously)

My browser would hang for long periods and then free up as if nothing were wrong. At the same time my Avast antivirus would stop working.

Thanks for that. After reading it and bearing in mind my reply above to aliEnRIK I'm convinced that my Avast antivirus is the cause of this. If it continues today I intend to do a full uninstall and reinstall.

What operating system? I have read of some issues with Avast in Win10 (although so far it's been fine for me) that have in some cases been resolved by uninstalling it.

The OP is using Outlook Express so XP probably. I've had an issue with AVAST and Vista and so probably best to stick with an MS AV for older OS.

XP SP3. I've stuck with OE because of its simplicity although I can see me having to change to Win 10 very soon. I'm currently using Firefox as a browser. Avast has been very reliable until now but I strongly suspect it was causing all the problems yesterday. An Avast security update late last night was applied and now everything seems to have returned to normal but I will be monitoring the situation today - and I have lots to do.

Uninstall AVAST and run a scan with MALWAREBYTES

I've upgraded many people from good old Outlook Express. The nearest I've come so far is Thunderbird. The main issue is explaining tabs as a few people still don't know what tabbed browsing is (yes, I'm dealing mainly with mature adults ;) But even Thunderbird can be run tab-less.

Tabs don't bother me but I'm sticking with OE and Firefox until I change this computer for something incredibly more modern which will run Win 10. This PC is six years old now and although still functioning brilliantly most of the time I know I'm not getting the full benefit of super-fast fibre with it.
