Mobile Phone Insurance

My friend has just realised he's been paying for mobile phone insurance for the last 18 months without realising. Can he claim it back?
When he took out a new phone contract, he got one months insurance free, but then he cancelled it at the end and thought no more about it. He's was checking up on his phone bill and realised that what he thought was his ordinary monthly amount, is in fact that PLUS £10 per month insurance!.
Can anyone clarify what he can and can't do?
Thanks
