    I'm less fussed about the OP's potential imminent death & a great deal more fussed about the lack of controls over the family member who isn't a tenant.

    The MSE Rule, from reading various threads, about family members, relatives etc in your other properties is DO NOT START.

    In all honesty if you value your relationship with the mademoiselle, remortgage as BTL and get a nice Neutral, Vetted tenant. Use the rent to subsidise relative if you wish. Just do not let OtherFamily get "just living there" status as you will end up in the wrong & likely out of a relationship & struggling to get your old home back.

    Here endeth the MSE Housing Forecast. We're not mean bitter twisted etc just collectively deeply cynical based on far too much experience.

    If you wish for this young man to become 'independent', then surely he should be encouraged to take some responsibility for his own life. Moving him into your flat where everything is 'free' to him, may be wonderful for him, but be prepared for the consequences, which as already outlined, may have considerable impact upon your own life.
