The second one has more RAM and a few more bells and whistles, such as a card reader that you can slot e.g. camera memory cards into. You don't say what you want this laptop for, so it's hard to advise. If it's just for internet browsing and word processing type things, then a low spec. one is fine. If you want to download lots of stuff and play games, then you'll need a higher spec. laptop.
Look at the detailed specifications of each, then decide whether you need it all. If not, go for a cheaper one. The thing that I would bear in mind is that Windows Vista has much higher graphics, memory and storage requirements than earlier versions of Windows, so you'll need to ensure that you have the pre-requisites to allow you to upgrade in due course if that is what you intend. Otherwise, go for one of the much more basic and cheaper Acers that are listed in the student laptops section.Debt at highest: £6,290.72 (14.2.1999)

Hi..
Its for gaming (newish games) and work, internet etc.. needs to be a laptop to save on space so thats why it cant be a desktop.
Looking for one that wont need upgrading for a while.0 -
In that case, the second one might be more appropriate as it's got more RAM and a higher spec. and a bigger screen. It also comes with Vista Home, whereas the first comes with XP.Debt at highest: £6,290.72 (14.2.1999)
