i3, but with 4GB only. And the screen is too small, especially for home use.0 -

For an extra £35 get something with an i3 processor which is approximately 2.5 -3x the processing CPU power of the dreadful celeron, not to mention a vastly superior integrated graphics processor.

This is just illustrative of pricing and not necessarily an endorsement of a particular company. Do also shop around on places like the argos outlet on ebay.
Sorry to hijack the thread OP, but just realised that I've bought a new one of these: Asus X553MA-XX715H Intel N2840 4GB 1TB White 15.6 Laptop - for my 11 year old for Christmas.
Only paid £210, but panicking a bit when I look at the chart above! Would it be good enough to run Office and stream BBC iplayer etc which is what it would be mainly used for (no gaming)? Should I return it and get something else??In deep...0 -

I'd personally spend a little more on an i3, it's more future proof as software demands (and child's demands) on resources only go up each year. No doubt she may want to run something more demanding on it at some point in the future and it will be found wanting.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -

Thanks Fightsback. Hoping it should be OK for a couple of years anyway, as long as it can stream iplayer etc without problems. Have a high speed internet connection (60Mb) so should have no excuses unless the processor is poor as you say. We'll have to see... thanks for the adviceIn deep...0 -
OK so we took her to Curry's today on the pretence of looking for a washing machine. There were some more expensive laptops that she liked the look of, but she did like this one...........

This is within our price range but I was wondering if it's an OK buy - ie it'll do for a few years??0 -
£329.99 and no DVD/CD player/rewriter!
Does she really need 1TB of storage?
Smaller screen and only 32GB of storage but only £149.99 (no dvd/cd player but it's white)

Much better spec CPU here for £30 less:
http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/lenovo-g50-15-6-laptop-silver-10137559-pdt.html
or this with more memory and a slightly faster CPU, more memory, a bigger HDD and an alleged longer battery life.

£329.99 and no record player either ! DVD/CD is becoming obsolete, an Ipad costs you considerably more and doesn't have one either, nor does a macbook air.
Please avoid this kind of rubbish as they are hopelessly underpowered. Your child will not thank you.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -

How is the screen too small? I use a 13.3" screen (Yoga 2 Pro), it's absolutely fine. I wouldn't go back to a 15.6" or bigger for a laptop as they're just too heavy. My work laptop's screen is marginally bigger at 14" but the machine is quite a bit heavier so I'm glad that I normally use it at my desk.0
