Returned debit card still in use.

Hello all,if this thread is in the incorrect section, please can it be moved.

I have recently been issued with a new debit card from my bank as the previous was damaged,my returned card was handed to a bank staff member in the bank, who said it will be destroyed.

I have been using the new debit card for six weeks now.My previous debit card (the returned damaged one) is still very active,by mistake I used the old (not in my possession card) for an Uk (high street shop) internet sale.I entered the front card details and the three security numbers from the rear.

The sale, went through the bank verification process with no problems,i was not asked any other security questions. The sale was for £290.00

So my question is,should my previous returned damaged debit card still be active ?.

Thank you for your time. jk.

It's not a situation I've come across previously but my guess is that until the original card expiry date is reached then the old number and CVV will still be valid. An argument could be made that issuing a replacement card should prevent any further authorisations with the old card details but in reality both cards point to the same account so it makes no difference which details are used.

The complication in your case is the somewhat strange decision to hand the card in at the branch to be destroyed, leading to the (very small) possibility that it wasn't destroyed and could be used by a rogue staff member - the sensible decision would have been to destroy it yourself.

Maybe it shouldn't, but what difference does it make? You made the purchase and the money came out of your account.

    No harm, no foul!

A damaged card will, with most banks, have a bit of leeway time before it stops being active, so if your card is damaged to the point where it won't work in an ATM but will online or in a shop (or vice versa) you can still use it to get cash or whatever before your new card arrives, and to allow you to make other arrangements for things like subscription payments or online shops.

That is all that has happened here. The bank clerk will have just destroyed the physical card but the card details will remain active for a month or two to allow you time to get everything switched over and not inconvenience you if you have an Amazon order going through - or what has happened in this case.

  • My concern is the active returned card details have been used for my previous internet, phone and other mail order type of shopping,so these sales merchants will have all my card details, front and back still on their archived history.
Another concern is after reading as much of the small print as possible, my bank states the card used to make any purchase has to be in my sole possession.
So I could be held liable if a victim of fraud/theft.
When my damaged card was handed back to the bank a new card was issued on the spot,so it must be their usual procedure.
Next step forward,i will visit a bank branch, explain my concerns and ask for a new debit card (with different card number and ask for all other active cards issued to me to be immediately cancelled.
The other alternative if they don't agree to the above is to close the account using the 7 day bank account switch service to my other bank.

    Thank you for the replies.

I will be blunt and say that I think you are completely overreacting. You would not be held liable for any fraud at all. If you surrender the card to a bank employee in a bank branch and the card is then used without your consent, it is extremely doubtful the bank would or could then seek to hold you liable.

And there has been no fraud, or saving of details - only a transaction that you authorised specifically by inputting the full card details yourself, apparently from memory. The card wasn't lost or compromised in any way - it was damaged, remained in your possession up until you gave it back to the bank and the bank let you use the existing one to avoid inconvenience.

Threatening to switch banks because absolutely nothing has gone wrong and the bank carried out a transaction that you asked them to is a bit silly.

OP a damaged card as opposed to a lost or stolen card will work for up to 30 days.
Continious payments that have been authorised before you get the new card will continue to get paid even after this time. For these you need to update the retailer with the new PAN number.

what exactly is the point of cancelling your 'new' card?

it's quite common for 'old' card to function for a time so you don't get hit will failed transactions or failed recurring transactions.

Damaged cards will work for up to 45 days to allow safe receipt of the replacement. It is inferred that the damaged card hasn't been compromised.

What is the OP complaining about?

  • Update,just left the bank.
Explained my concern and what I would like done.

Result I was offered a new debit card straight away, made in branch with a new number (expiry date same as existing card) and all previous debit cards will cease to work in less than 24 hours.

Kept my existing debit card so to test the cut off period, so all now nearly complete plus the info received re internet payments was very interesting.

    Thank you for your time.
