Vauxhall servicing

I have a nearly two year old Astra which is coming up to its first major service.

Standard dealer cost is £240 which is steep, though given its still under warranty then there is an attraction in getting a main dealer to do it. I can get an independent to do it with Vauxhall parts or potentially get a quote from independent to use as a bargaining or price matching tactic.

It has been in once for some minor warranty work which was done quickly and efficiently so just wondering if anyone has any moneysaving ideas on getting the work done for the best price.

  • EU law means you don't have to get it serviced at the manufacturers dealer, however to ensure warranty is remaining valid and garage you use to carry out the service must do it to manufacturer standard. If a backstreet garage can carry out the repairs to manufacturer standard it will have no impact on warranty.

I would keep it main dealer, at this age, for certain

And have you joined their 'club', for discounts, offers and cheap MoT's when its due next year

What are you getting for your £240 though?

You can get a £99 service thats just an oil change and a quick look for more jobs to bump the price up. Not really a service though.

  • I am in a similar position - my Corsa is coming up for 2 years old and due a service.

Based on my experience with the dealer I am inclined to take the car to a local garage for the service. I recently took it to the dealer with some issues and they said they couldn't find anything wrong after a day with it. Took it took a local garage and in the space of 40 minutes they identified 4 issues. I now have it booked into the dealership again and if their service isn't top notch I'll be taking it further.

What is the attraction of taking it back to the dealer?

Whilst I agree a local garage will be cheaper and possibly as good a full main dealer service history is much more attractive to a prospective purchaser. Also if you intend to keep the car once the manufacturers warranty expires should you have a major problem you could approach Vauxhall and ask for them to contribute some help..

Do you fully own the car?

If it's lease/pcp/whatever, then you may have no choice but to use the dealership as you don't own the car.

No it's paid for, just considering the balance of warranty and goodwil as people say against relative cost.

Bought from a main dealer as the price was keen, less than half list price at just over a year old and with 15000 miles on it. Returned to same dealer with a minor clutch problem which got sorted quickly under warranty, and this dealer is only a mile or so from my work so is also convenient.

Look at prices from a local independent that I've used previously and would expect to save maybe £100 but will maybe try that with a haggle with the main dealer as well.

I don't see the point in saving £100 on an asset worth £10/15k

With Vauxhall, you MUST keep going back over and over and over again until they fix it.

Unless things have changed since I had mine, all the service bulletins start

Why do you think this is "steep"? (I assume you mean more than you want to pay.)

What is covered by such a service, and do services from independents cover the same?

When I look for a service, I look for what they actually replace, not what they just check. Anyone can do a service for £50 if they don't bother replacing anything: Oil, oil filter, air filter, cabin filter, brake fluid, spark plugs, coolant/antifreeze, fuel filter,
