Claimable - Surfboard blew into parked car

Options
After much searching for advice I can't find any thing quite like this. Unlike the countless wind blew door open threads.

A windy day on the beach. Just finished surfing, put my board into its bag then put onto the roof of my van whilst I get changed inside. I hear a loud bang, my board has blown off the roof into the adjacent van and dented it. I know 'ish' the owner of the van. Now there's no dispute over responsibility etc, although it's complete accident, ultimately it is me to blame.

Somehow the damage will need to be paid for, we both want it to be as little as possible. However it could be best case £150 or worst £800.

I would normally just let the insurance companies deal with it but is this even claimable on motor insurance. Or would they laugh off me and the other party, whilst still recording a claim, thus hiking up my premiums.

Thanks in advance.
Ed

I'm no expert, but I can't see how it can possibly be covered by your car insurance.

Your insurance will pay if they think you are negligent.

I had something similar happen to me. A friend leant some planks against the side of his car that blew over and put a three dents in the door of mine.

I ended up claiming off my insurance.

Possibly. The liability section will include whilst loading or unloading. Do you carry the board on the roof and fail to secure it correctly?

If not, the liability section on your home insurance might cover it.

It could be seen as negligence. If the board was on a roof rack but not tied down, it's an insecure load.
  • I reckon your insurer will pay out for the damage to the other person's vehicle. You've failed to secure your surf board to your car causing it to blow off. There's the negligence. Then it causes damage to the other person's vehicle. There's the loss.
  • Thanks for the swift answers folks

Does it not like the way it looks today?
