smartmeter changing supplier
Options
Please Check your bill if you change supplier after having a smart meter for Gas installed.
My smart meter gives readings in cubic meters I have just had my first bill from my new supplier and found that I had used twice the number of kilowatt than normal.
The problem was that they converted my reading (which was metres ) from cubic feet to cubic meters again which meant that I was charged 2.83 times to much. May be just an isolated case as my meter serial number was incorrect on there records but please be aware out there

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case.
It can sometimes go undetected for years.0 -
This sort of mix up has been going since 2004 with metric/imperial gas meters. It does nt really matter whether the meters are smart or dumb.
The metric units get multiplied by 33 instead of 11 to bill in kwhrs0 -
There's an EU directive on data protection that has to be obeyed by Nov 2017 that means companies have to provide portable data to customers I think this will happen European wide whatever occurs in the referendum. Supposedly a third party in the UK will collect all smartmeter data and provide it to energy companies imminently anyway. May help in the future.
At the moment I've just ported from British Gas to So Energy, who as a company don't collect Smartmeter data. As I've no wish to crawl on the floor to read the gas meter regularly, does anyone know of a cheaper company with good customer service that does smartmeter readings? Are the cheapies all tech poor? Didn't fancy the British Gas offer in the energy club with the large exit penalty. Now it seems I'm missing out by not being in the big 6.0 -

Sainsburys can use BG smart meter data and possibly Ovo but you would need to check. As a rule, smart meters go dumb when a supplier is switched. The Data Communications Company (DCC) is due to go live later this year (or possibly decade). Until this time, suppliers are rolling out SMETS1 smart meters which will have to be upgraded or replaced once the DCC goes live. DCC will be the hub that all suppliers use to get customer meter data. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

This is what OVO say:
'For example, at OVO we use Secure Smart meters. The only other suppliers currently using Secure Smart meters are First Utility, Utilita and E.ON. So if you decide to switch to one of those suppliers, they’ll be able to communicate with your OVO Smart meter.
However, if you're switching to OVO from First Utility, Utilita or E.ON, it doesn't necessarily mean we'll be able to communicate with their Secure Smart meters.'
