New bank account

Hi guys. I was declared bankrupt a few days ago and Barclays have just declined me for a basic account. Can anyone help with where I can go next? A direct debit facility is a must really. Thanks

Barclays declined? I'm glad to be told otherwise but Barclays provide accounts to anyone regardless of debt owing elsewhere in their business.
Yorkshire bank readycash is available to all now.
Lloyds basic account is available
Dec 1st will see the Nationwide FlexBasic account available to you.
Many more will open up in December, but those are your immediate options.0 -
Yes Barclays have declined me. No idea why but she tried several times. I've read a few things about cash plus and card one but have no idea what they are like.0

I'd try another Barclays branch - I'm not sure anyone has ever been turned down for a Barclays basic account.
As far as I recall, they don't even do any kind of credit check - just confirmation of ID.0 -
Does this mean I'm the first?? Wahoooo. Thanks to the first reply I managed to get the Yorkshire bank one which is the same as Barclays. That hadn't come up on any search so I really appreciate your advice, 10 mins and the account was set up0

Glad you got one sorted. Whilst a bank may decline you an account for any reason, Barclays are currently in a position where they disregard current and former debts when it comes to a basic account opening.
May I ask if you have perhaps had issues with Barclays? Do they suspect or have they accused you of anything with perhaps a previous debt?
If I had to take a guess I think it's highly likely the bank clerk whom tried to open an account for you did so on a current account application, not a basic one.0 -
P.S Mobile banking works with yorkshire readycash also, a plus on Barclays service whilst you are undischarged.
If you miss contactless payments, Nationwide will provide a contactless card with their FlexBasic account as of Dec 1st.
If using Apple pay, Lloyds and Nationwide basic accounts are working for bankrupts.0 -
Nope! Not the first I'm afraid. Though I can count on one hand the number that have been refused, usually seems to be there is a fraud marker on the credit reference files. You might want to look at them.
The accounts mentioned by Alltaken are brand new to BRs and that is probably why you've not seen them mentioned before.
Thanks for posting back that you were successful in opening one as obviously there is very little experience with these accounts as yet. Any feedback about the account you have in future will be useful as well as it helps us quote experience.BSCno.87The only stupid question is an unasked oneLoving life as a Kernow Hippy0 -

Whilst that makes perfect sense and I wouldn't doubt your advice as you've always given myself and others superb info, I thought a fraud marker wouldn't just decline at Barclays but all banks? I mention this because all banks account terms mention fraud is an automatic decline.0 -
I have never had any previous banking with Barclays so no debt ever happened with them. As far as I'm aware I haven't committed any form of fraud. Getting nervous about my OR interview now0
-
You can't change your financial history. If the OR has a public interest in punishing you they will, otherwise it's not going to happen. In my experience I spent a great deal of time worrying about a 40 minute interview that can't be helped. It's going to happen and I'm sure you'll be just fine. Relax and let the next 12 months come and go without worrying too much.0
