Washing machine filling with water when off?

Options
Hello all,

Hoping someone can help?

I am renting a property and have told the letting agents weeks ago and over and over that the washing machine is filling with water when turned off? They have done nothing.

So I am wondering if theres anything I can do to fix it, something simple, maybe just a loose part or something?

I have noticed the water is clean and it only happens when the kitchen sink is used and the kitchen sink is right next to washing machine.

Is the washing machine drain hose plumbed into your sink waste? Can you check if it is correctly fitted? Often if the drain hose isn't correctly fitted sink waste can drain into to the washing machine via the washing machine's drain hose. The hose should go upwards from the machine before dropping down to where it joins the sink waste.

There's a bit of a contradiction there. If it only happens when you're using the sink I'd expect it to be dirty water. If it happens all the time I'd expect it to be clean water.

Is the outlet from the washing machine plumbed into the waste under the sink? If it is, the water from the sink is finding it easier to go into the machine than down the drain. Make sure there is a big loop in the machine waste going as high as you can, water doesn't like to flow up hill. Or the drain may be partially blocked, waste fittings are usually pretty easy to take apart & clean out.

If it is front loading, does the water gradually fill up from the bottom of the drum or does it flow in through the soap dispenser? If the former, check out suggestions on posts #2 & #3. If the latter, the solenoid valve(s) could be passing water when off, i.e. stuck open. Turn off the little blue/red valves and see if that stops it.

The water seems clean, maybe its not?

It worked fine for 2 months and only now for some reason at the very bottom of the drum is filling up with water. Water gradually fills up from the bottom of the drum. If we don't use the sink no water appears in the drum at all.

I will check under the sink later to see what I can see. I called indesit and they said its probably the valve needs tightening?

I did notice it started to happen after the washer had a big long spin.

I cleaned out the part at the bottom to see if anything was stuck ie a old sock or anything but there was nothing there and didnt solve the issue. I dont know that that part is called but its at the very front of the washer behind a screen and theres like a dial you turn and a little water comes out and you can pull out anything thats got stuck.

That's rubbish! If the valves needed tightening you'd have a wet floor. As everyone has said if the water only comes in when using the sink it's a drain hose problem. If the water comes in very slowly all the time it's a fill valve problem.
