How does interest free period work?

My card says 56 interest free period. I heard this doesn't always mean you will get 56 days on every purchase but it depends on the time of the month you make a purchase and the statement issue date, is this correct?

So for example If my statement date is 11 December and I make a purchase today 19th November how long will it be before I have to pay in full to avoid interest?

You'll need to pay by the due date which wil be shown on your 11 Dec statement.
