Energy Refunds

Can energy companies ask for refunds to be paid back?

Been with EDF for 5 years - Duel fuel - never had an electrcity bill in all that time- had a £1500cr on the account in sept so asked for a refund, they said an issue with the account and will need to rebill all five years - now ended up with £1500dr on account - turns out that because they refunded me £500 in 2012, 2013 and 2014 this is what a owe - now they want to put me on a payment plan to pay this back - are they allowed to do this,
it has now taken over 12 weeks to get to this point with proper breakdown from them - calculations etc -

any advice is appreciated

In general companies can demand that payments they made in error be refunded.

That said, there are some circumstances in which energy companies can only back bill for 12 months usage. I suspect this is not relevant to your case but, as I am unclear about the details of your case, I am not sure.

I cannot fully understand the details of your case.

Are you saying the situation is that you thought you were owed £1500 but you received none of this back and are also now being told you are £1500 in debt?

Also I cannot really understand how you were in credit by £1500 if your supplier had refunded £500 as recently as 2014. When they refunded this amount (i.e. 2014) did they not refund the full amount they thought you were in credit by at that time? And if so how come you came to have £1500 credit the following year?
