minimum broadband speed for tv dongle

Thinking of trying now tv with the dongle, my broadband speed checks at about 6 on my wifi router for downloads, would that be fast enough to watch the programs?

Steady 6Mbps might be ok for streaming SD.

What dongle? Chromecast? Fire? Or something else?

I use now tv with a chromecast and have a BB speed of 1.6Mbps so 6 should be more than enough for standard quality if not HD too.

It's no good looking at your sync speed, you need to do an online bandwidth test..... Preferably several different ones, as some sneaky ISPs tend to give users full bandwidth to those sites whilst limiting speed to everything else.

  • I was trying to post a link for the OP , but as a new user I can not

look at thinkbroadbank site and run there speed test , at the moment you only have the link speed between your router and the wireless device

can someone link that site for me?

Thinking of trying now tv with the dongle,
What dongle? NowTV (white box) gets its data via wifi (the black Nowtv box handles wifi OR cable). 6Mbps is plenty.

I recently bought a Now tv box and have a download speed of 3.8mbps. It works fine. Now tv state a minimum of 2.5mbps is needed.

Would be interested to know if anyone has similar speed and uses two now tv boxes at the same time.

6Mbps should be fine for Standard HD (but not Full HD).

You could also try the BBC Iplayer test page ... that's a similar scheme to what NowTV uses. So if you're OK for Iplayer you should be OK for NowTV.

Edit: Just seen that BBC have retired their diagnostic tool. :(
