dvd to hardrive

i want to copy a dvd to my hardrive but not really sure how to do it, or more so what program is needed to do it, anyone advise on a free and easy program i should /could use

How do you want to rip it?

Do you just want a copy of the video or do you want a complete image of the dvd so to speak?

I was gonna suggest this but I just realised OP might want to rip a software or something similar to the HDD it isnt that clear though so I assume its video.

some family movies that are on dvd

not really sure i understand what is meant by "how do you want to rip it"
do you mean the full disc or sections (am i able to do that )

In this thread somebody suggests using DVD Decryptor and Auto GK.

Just check you get a freeware one.
