Don't normally do AI, but will be d-i-ying in somewhere in SE Asia later in the year.
Booked with Chevron Holidays.
Fully expecting a mix of weather, so won't be disappointed with a bit of rain and a bit of a chill.
Last time I went to Malta was as a young member of Her Majesty's Andrew in 1974. I expect things will have a changed a bit.
Pete I love Mellieha in the summer but you are a long way from Valletta.
Depending on the dates you will be there have a look at these.

I was in Malta last month and while it does offer beach holidays I don't think January is a good time to go for that. I went for a city break style holiday (history, architecture, restaurants and bars) and it was brilliant for that. In October the weather was excellent but don't think you'd get that in January. You wouldn't be short of things to do and see but I don't think it's what you're looking for.
thanks maman....................usually that is exactly what we would be looking for - love historical sight-seeing etc. However we are going on a city break (Copenhagen) in a few weeks so I was really just thinking a cheap and cheerful lounging about holiday with a bit of warmth for a few days - not hot but more than we would get in Scotland!
I am reading / hearing a lot of good things about Malta's history though and that there is a lot to see and do......so something to think aboutbig bad debts: Gone!

Fairly warm during the day, warm enough to swim in the sea, but decidedly chilly at night. Last time, I had to swap a hire car because the heater didn't work and we had the fire lit in our villa every evening.
I've only ever been to Malta in the summer, so can't comment on the winter weather there.
That sounds pretty perfect to be honest, exactly the type of thing we're after
Guess its just a toss-up really isn't it....could be like that, or could be rainybig bad debts: Gone!

I have spent the last 8 Januarys in Algarve. The truth is you could have 4 days of brilliant sunshine or 4 days of pouring rain or anything in between. I suspect the same in Malta. I have had snow in Paphos in January and rain at the pyramids in January. Your chances of good weather is better abroad but there are no guarantees in Europe in January. Look upon it as a bit like a good old Scottish summer (be prepared for anything)Something Really Interesting0

The flights are a steal because it is out of season.
Plan for a sightseeing holiday and regard any warm sunshine as a bonus0 -
You're more likely to be warm in the Mediterranean than in the Algarve but either's a bit of a toss up.0

well methinks neither of those will be that warm!
I was in the Canaries in Jan this year when the kelima wind was blowing- so it was dusty and misty and only 16 degrees so I don't think the weather can be guaranteed anywhere!
More sightseeing opportunities in Malta if the weather isn't so good.
It might be worth checking the hotels that have caught your eye to see if they have heating.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

We went to Malta in November and found it a bit too chilly - needed a jumper on most days (the locals had winter coats on!). We have also visited The Algarve out of season and it was very rainy! I liked both destinations, I would probably choose sightseeing in Malta over the Algarve, but if I was just looking for relaxation I would pick somewhere a bit warmer where I could sit outside in just a t-shirt and read a book.0

I've been to the algarve in december and it can be very mixed - mid 20's but also low teens and raining0
