Power supply warranty

Power supply bought October 2014
Died November 2015

Someone has told us that we should be able to get a replacement as electrical items have 2 year standard warranty now ?

Never listen to "someone". You need to contact whoever sold you the power supply and see what they say, they may choose to do one of repair, replace or refund (could be a partial refund) or they may require you to provide an independent report to confirm that the fault was inherent (you pay for the report but the cost will be refunded if it finds in your favour).

Well, the manufacturer's warranty is worth checking as well as it can be longer than 1 year.

Nothing 'by law' has any warranty at all-it depends on the manufacturer own policy. Beyond that, you are dependent on SOGA or the CRA 2015-neither of which gives an automatic 2 year warranty.
If the warranty was 12m only, ask the manufacturer nicely if they will replace on a goodwill basis-you have nothing to lose.

1 year warranty is the norm and i've known many PSUs that fail mysteriously just after 12 months.

You've not said what type of PSU, make, spec or anything though.

My Corsair PSU came with a 3 year warranty.

1 year warranty is normal on most things.

PSU's from good brands very frequently have much longer, as forgotmyname says Corsair do 3 years, I think Seasonic are 3 years (or is it 5?), Antec are I think 5 years, and I believe there is/was a brand with either 7 or 10 for some premium models.

It's 2 years for most mobiles, tablets, monitors, hard drives, home appliances etc., and 3 years warranty isn't uncommon for some.

PSU from a tenner upwards .
But as said the expensive models often have a decent manufacturers warranty .

Yes, my EVGA PSU has a 10 year warranty. I'm not sure how they can do that with a bunch of RoSH components, but if they're confident then so am I.
