Unidentified network

I tried to connect to the internet this morning but it came up that I had an unidentified network. I tried troubleshooting and it came up "Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. I have tried rebooting it, but that hasn't worked.
What else can I do to get it working?
I am with virgin media and use one of the old modem boxes. It is a desktop pc, Lenovo H30-00.

Not for an ethernet connection it won't.
First thing to do is power cycle the VM modem.
By "old modem" I'm assuming this isn't a Superhub and you're on one of VM's legacy products.
Is this just a VM modem directly into your PC or is a router involved?
If there is a router try the modem directly into the PC. If not and you have no other PC to test with I think you'll just have to bite the bullet and call VM.0 -

Dug out my old computer and the same problem, said that the network did not assign a network address to my computer.
The cable modem is the scientific Atlanta 2100.
Looks like a call to India.0 -
Have you checked the VM faults page? Asked a neighbour?
It could be the modem has turned up its toes, it may be a local area fault, or it may be one of VM's highly trained installation engineers have naffed up your connection while connecting a new customer.
That happened (I suspect) twice with me. I thought the scruffy looking individual fiddling in their box was somebody nicking cables until I spotted the VM logo on his jumper. Shortly after I noticed I had a poor connection.0 -
First make sure that you have the most recent drivers for your network interface card installed on your computer.
◾Second, type ncpa.cpl into the search box and hit enter
◾On the network connections page select right click your adapter and choose properties
◾On the Internet Protocol v 4 (tcp/ip), select "Obtain an IP address automatically".
