Used Toyota LandCruiser help

5 months ago I bought a 07 plate LandCruiser with full Toyota service history from an independent dealership & 50,000 on the clock so low mileage. In place was a 3 month warranty & the Toyota 10 year anti corrosion warranty for that vehicle. I spent a lot of money as this truck should do me a decade & I thoroughly checked it over to the best of my ability. Everything looked perfect, after a month of ownership I opened up the slide sunroof & that's when the trouble started.

It is watertight in the vehicle but upon opening it I was showered in rust. Toyota dealership says it looks like it was never sealed correctly when new causing water ingress, the steel plate that the sunroof sits/slides on is horrendously corroded but only visible once opened.

Contacted dealership I bought it from & they stated go to Toyota as under anti corrosion warranty. Toyota said a flat no on various grounds

1 I did not buy it directly from then
2 it's an old car ( maybe but it still cost £16k)
3 anti corrosion warranty is valid but does not cover sunroofs only body panels
4 it's not their problem as never ever had this on a landcruiser before
5 even threatened that if I did not continue to have it serviced with then then any VOSA recall would not be honoured! Utter rubbish they have since apologised for that remark stating the call centre got confused!

I contacted the dealer I bought it off & they refused on the grounds it was covered by Toyota ( there warranty has since expired)

So am I stuck with a huge bill? One Toyota dealer guessed at £500 another one guessed at £1200 to £2000 neither one are willing to put their estimate in writing so far.

I cannot get my head around that this is part of the vehicles main bodywork & is factory fitted with internal rust. Yet as far as Toyota is concerned it is a hole in the roof because it is not the roof so not a main body panel = no anti corrosion warranty. Has rather put me of this truck as there is no customer care. Any comments much appreciated.

That certainly is an unusual fault. I guess the drains became blocked and the roof space was full of water?

But ... the dealer absolutely is liable. The fault was clearly there at the time of sale. All this deflection about warranty is just pure deflection.

Give the dealer one final opportunity to pay for the repair (in writing) and say that of they don't you'll get it repaired and sue them for the cost.

PS. Make sure that Toyota have done the recall (or 'customer campaign' as they call it) to change the seals at the base of the injectors. The original (copper) seals gradually anneal and let exhaust gases through, contaminating the oil. This is the only major common fault on an otherwise excellent vehicle.

Deffo down to the dealer to fix. Toyota have said there's an inherent fault there at the point of purchase and its within six months anyway.

Thank you for your reply, the dealer stated it was a mechanical warranty only? As to the copper seals on the injectors I checked with Toyota when I purchased it. They said as far as they knew it had never been done by them as it did not need to be done. Only certain models were on the campaign. Mine is the d4d lc4. Thank you for your advice

Hi thank you for your reply, dealers warranty was for 3 months so its out of date. They spent that long arguing

Forget about 'warranty'. Your statutory rights are not affected, and they are provided for by the Sale of Goods Act.

The dealer can say what they like, but can't change their legal liabilities.

According to a post on tlocuk.co.uk, the VINs of the cars which need the injector seals changed are:
    KDJ125 JTE AZ29J# 00019035-00050831 June,2004 Through October,2007
    KDJ120 JTE BZ29J# 00049705-00160767 June,2004 Through October,2007

[Note these will be the manufacture dates in Japan, not the sale date in the UK]

I'm not as convinced as other on here that you will get very far with this.

We have a Jeep Commander same age and similar problem.

How much money are you willing to spend on chasing this p? It is all about risk and reward.

If you informed them of this within the warranty period it is irrelevant that they then fobbed you off until the 3 months expired. If you can prove that you made them aware of this issue while covered by their warranty then they need to sort it out.

It might be worth closely checking the terms of their warranty.

Anti corrosion warranty requires that vehicle inspected annually to keep it valid. Do you have stamps showing this in your service book?

    If yes, pursue with Toyota.

    If no, then tough luck.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

Of course he doesn't! Does anyone?!

The buyer was seduced by the 'full Toyota service history' but the fact that this wasn't a Toyota approved used car means Toyota will obviously wash their hands of it. Had it been an approved used car from a Toyota dealer I would have expected them to rectify.
The dealer you bought it from must be a bunch of chancers if they're saying take it to Toyota and claim under the anti corrosion warranty. Why buy such an expensive car off a bunch of cowboys.
