Default from 6 years ago

Hello
i was a student in the UK in 2009. I left after my course finished and returned again in 2011 to work full time. In 2014 I received a call from Lowells saying that I was in default for £28 on a home wireless contract. I have no recollection of receiving any claims for the funds while I was still in the UK.
Once I received confirmation that I was in default I paid the amount in full. On my Experian profile , under TV, phone, and internet I now have a warning sign in my most recent month beside Lowell Portfolio LTD account.
As I understand it, these warnings will be there until 6 years have passed from the date of payment. Is this true?
Is there anything I can do about the fact that I wasn't in the country and was not contacted about the debt for 3 years?
Thanks

As McKneff mentioned, the default will stay on your credit report for six years from the default date.
If you wanted to describe any relevant circumstances to future lenders that view your credit report the reason why the account defaulted, (due to not being in the country) you can add a 'Notice of Correction'.
The 'Notice of Correction' will automatically drop off your report when the default comes off our credit report. If you would like us to add this to your report please get in contact with us.

If you left the UK in 2009, the default would have occurred around that time and the 6 years should either be up or will be up very soon. So if its just a matter of waiting a couple of months for the default to drop off then wait. If you came back to the UK to start work in 2011 and remained unaware of the existence of the default until 2014, then it would appear that its existence was not causing you any major credit problems during the initial 3 years and you have not indicated that it is causing you any actual credit problems now, so best to stop worrying and wait.
Not quite sure what you mean by 'these warnings' being there for 6 years from the payment date, but it is not true anyway. The default drops off 6 years from the date of the default. Everything concerning the account will vanish as if it never existed.0 -
Six years from the date it was appliedLive for what tomorrow has to bring, not what yesterday has taken away0

No. Not true.
If the account is recorded as a default, it and any later status history will remain for 6 years from the "default date" which is a separate date from any D or 8 markers in the account monthly status history.
