CUE system puts up car insurance because of burglary?!

I have no claims on my car insurance and am coming to renewal.

A few months ago I was burgled and my bag was taken with car keys inside. Police advised zero chance burglars wanted my car.

I called my motor insurers (co op) to check if policy required me to change the locks. They said no obligation to do this, they would make a note that I called them.

I now find this has been logged as a claim which is putting up my insurance by £100. Nothing happened to my car, there was no loss, I did not ask for anything, just clarification of my policy. It feels like I'm being charged £100 for having been burgled.

Is it worth pursuing this to try to get the note off my CUE file? When I called about it no one advised me that it could affect my quote rating. I'm absolutely disgusted about how this has been handled.

Can I do anything apart from resolve to never, ever call insurers with a query again?

  • You are potentially a higher risk and your insurers are hedging their bets that you may revert with a theft claim in due course, so a higher premium

I would say there is nothing you can do about this other than shop about.

You have lost the keys. They are almost as valuable as the car itself.

I can see where they are coming from. Your car has a set of keys which could be used at anytime to steal it (unlikely though). Also you keep your keys in your bag which is an item most likely to get stolen so that increase the risk to them.

I would have changed the locks anyway, someone out there has keys to your car? I wouldnt be happy with that.

They could use your car for their next job. A few years back they attempted to steal my dads van several times. The police said there had been a burglary close by each time and they probably thought it was an easy target to hault their swag away. But he had added an immobiliser to it.

The one time they had pushed it half way down the street.

Try on comparing sites, and take the lowest to them and ask if they can match, if not then leave.

If what you say is correct (that it is on CUE as a "claim") then you do need to get this corrected.

(You experienced a "loss" (no claim) which is what should have been put on your record)

You do now have to disclose this loss whenever you approach insurers for quotes over the next 3/5 years.

But (if what you say is correct) any insurer checking the CUE will see there you have a claim on your record as opposed to a "loss".

Contact your insurer and ask them to confirm that the CUE entry is correct (and not down as a "claim"), then assuming they do need to correct this, ask them to confirm back to you in writing it has been corrected to a "loss".

Keep that confirmation on file for the next 5/6 years in case it comes back to bite.
