Tartar is just plaque which has been on the teeth , up disturbed, for a minimum of 72 hours. So in other words if , at any time in that 72 hours, the plaque is removed it cannot form tartar. Careful use of brushes and tepe brushes will stop tartar forming.

Use of scaling instruments really should be left to professionals as over use of scalers can cause severe damage. A study where hygienists allowed them selves to be scaled every few weeks showed they developed severe wear of root surfaces !
  • A good electric toothbrush which has an interdental brush will work wonders Braun professional series has a good choice of brushes which are cheap
I also use a waterpik to flush out any bits of food left after brushing and I use an ordinary mouthwash( listerene..) all twice daily,
Seems to work for me and keeps the plaque at bay and the dentist happy.

All mouthwash, unless prescribed by a dentist for a specific problem , is a waste of time and money. Most are classed as cosmetics as there is no clinical evidence they do any good , and if used within an hour of brushing teeth they interact with toothpaste and wash away any fluoride negating any good done.
No toothbrush head can clean Inbetween teeth , interdental brushes such as tepes are effective and easy to use and much more effective than waterpiks, but waterpiks can be a good choice for those who don't have the dexterity for interdental brushes.
  • I have also heard that mouthwashes are a waste of time and money. Mouthwashes such as Corsodyl do eventual stain the teeth, it takes months for the dark stains to go away.

When I brush I do not even rinse out with water because I want the flouride to get to work on my teeth.
  • The first time I ever had my teeth cleaned by a hygenist, I was told you should use flouride mouthwash BEFORE brushing your teeth. While this might sound strange, it makes sense, and I've done it ever since.
