Tartar Removal For Teeth?

I don't smoke and brush three times every day but I have some brown staining on my teeth. I have tried stain remover powder but it hasn't even done anything. Im not due for a check up until January so I wont be able to get a scale and polish until then. Could anyone please advise me what to do. I have seen some tooth scalers which can be used at home in Wilko but I wouldn't want to step into the unknown.

Do you use mouthwash? Mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine stain teeth brown. No one should use a mouthwash unless prescribed by a dentist , they are a waste of money and rinse away any fluoride so negating the use of toothpaste.

Cola drinks, coffee, tea will also stain. Effective brushing will stop staining building up.

Do not try to scale your teeth yourself, there is a reason dentists and hygienists train for so long. If you want the stain removed you can pay for a private hygiene appointment at most dentists. Costs will vary , £30 to £40 is around average.

    Indeed.

If you're willing to pay for it - then (within reason) you can have them cleaned as often as you like.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I didn't know this! I use mouthwash everyday and put staining down to caffeine and coke. Is it only if it has that ingredient?

I attended a talk given by a dentist, who warned that his fellow practice members used and recommended Corsodyl, which is an excellent product (one of the few actually effective) but is very prone to teeth staining. He suggested using only occasionally and then using the 'daily' version. He also said that he wouldn't recommend using tooth paste and mouthwash at the same time.

Another thing he mentioned was not to rinse after using tooth paste; just use water on the brush.

I once had a locum dentist try to flog me some Corsodyl mouthwash. I don't use a mouthwash and wasn't interested in purchasing any.

I was told by my dentist that mouthwash should not stain the teeth and that it is ok to use.

The only mouthwashes that actually have any practical use are those containing chlorhexidine. Indeed 98% of mouthwashes are classified as cosmetics because there is no good clinical evidence for their use.

However because there are concerns over bacteria developing resistance, increasing numbers of people developing allergies and staining people should only use a mouthwash containing chlorhexidine if prescribed by their dentist and only for a short time .

Mouthwash interacts with toothpaste so shouldn't be used within two hours of brushing. Also because you want the toothpaste to stay in contact with your teeth to release fluoride you should spit, don't rinse.

I have only used chlorohexidine mouthwash when I had my wisdom teeth out because I couldn't brush for 2 days. I brush 3 times every day with a soft bristle brush which also has interdental bristles which get right between teeth. Colgate total regular toothpaste is all I use plus the wisdom clean between tooth brush nothing else. A dentist told me as long as I brush twice a day mouthwash is not needed. I do have some abrasion on my lower teeth due to using too much whitening toothpaste in my teens and had to have my 2 front teeth veneered and later on crowned because of this.

I have a tooth scaler and pick which I use multiple times a week. Getting rid of the tartar and keeping it off meant my gums moved back up to where they are supposed to be and my teeth look and feel better. They're also a lot less sensitive and need Sensodyne less.
