Switching from Domestic and commutation to Business 1

If you switch over from domestic and commutation to Business 1 and you make a claim, would you have to produce documents showing you are paying tax and a registered company etc?

Also, if you are pulled over and policy states that you have business 1 (which with many insurance companies only covers travelling to a separate location) would they be aware that your cover didn't allow for ladders on roof and brushes in car?

Businesses don't have to be paying tax nor a "registered company".

Are you saying that your cover states not in force in the event of you carrying ladders + brushes?

Yes, many insurance companies don't cover tools. Only Aviva that I found!

But are you saying that if you drive with ladders on your roof your motor insurance is invalid?

Or that the ladders aren't covered for damage/loss etc?

Invalid! Or so the insurance companies say. I guess you could claim to the police if stopped that you were using them for unpaid work!
  • Are you driving a van or a car? On a van business use is known as 'own goods' use for tradesman. If it's a car you'll need business 1 as you said, you may also need to let your insurer know you use it with ladders etc. You can get separate tools cover with a quick google search.
  • Just seen it's a car sorry!
