Hi my son wants to upgrade his graphics card as the one he has isn't letting him play in even medium resolution

His basic set up is this:-
Asus P8Z77-V LK Socket 1155 DVI HDMI DisplayPort 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
Intel Core i5 3570K 3.4GHz Socket
Coolermaster 850W Silent Pro M2 Modular PSU

originally he wanted this card but it's just a bit too big for the case

So now he has been looking at the
MSI GTX 980TI Gaming Graphics Card from Amazon
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00ZPEAFXI/ref=s9_simh_gw_p23_d0_i2?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=0WXGXYWVRN8ZGEK8JFB2&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=577048787&pf_rd_i=desktop

How do we check to see if this will work on his set up and get the results that he's wanting

thanks
sparkie

    What is your existing case?
    What monitor(s) set up?

Edit: that msi gtx 980 ti is one of the shorter gtx 980 ti.
I notice in your other post saying his existing is a 25cm long GTX 660

There is none GTX 980 ti for that length. Shortest one is 267mm

If the new card has to be about 250mm, it need to be R9 390X or GTX 970

It looks like MSi GTX 980ti should fit.
Easiest way is open the case and measure it.

Pretty sure that it will fit space wise.
Is that the only requirements when updating the graphics card?

your PSU should be more than adequate... other than that, should be fine if it fits....

PSU, motherboard capability and physical size are the basic requirement.

Then you need to determined if the video card suit you.
    Is your CPU bottleneck it?
What is the requirement of the game?
How many monitor(s) to run? what resolution?
Is it worth spending extra to get higher end card?

How will I find out about the bottleneck possibilities

  • What sort of games are being played? While not superb, the GTX 660 TI isn't a terrible card, I've got one in one of my rigs and I can plod along on medium settings with GTA V for example. With the processor you've listed I suspect a 980 TI would probably be a bit overkill, you might want to save yourself 150 quid and get a standard 980, or even a 970 TI?

Also important is how much RAM you've got in the system, as that will also affect FPS.

this site is quite handy, on each game page (that one happens to be for CoD:Ghosts) you can check system specs and get an idea of how your rig will perform, along with suggesting bottlenecks.
