How to colect old appliances from recycling centres or similar

Hi guys,

As per title I am an Electrical Eng. and some of my hobbies involve quite a lot of DIY work.

In the old days I remember going to a local scrappy and bringing in some appliances such as microwaves, washing machines etc for the scrap value. These have lots of usable items such as filters, power supply, motors, etc. which would otherwise cost me a fortune.

Nowadays with all the legislation I can't seem to be able to get them from anywhere. People on eBay tend to be greedy and sell faulty items for a ridiculous ammount of money because according to them its just an easy fix, bla, bla...

I used to live in Croydon and when taking rubbish to the recycling centre they had loads of appliances there, but people weren't authorised to take them.

Any ideas? I'm in Coventry BTW.

Put an add in the local paper/newsagents window that you will collect old appliances for free.

Many people pay their council £10 to collect from them so they would be delighted to get it for free.

    as poppy says, advertise.
You can also make requests on your local freecycle but most have a requirement that you offer stuff before you can start asking.

My local council charges £40 to collect large items - I would have happily have agreed to someone having my old fridge if they had been willing to collect it!

If you do advertise, make sure that you respond promptly to offers and that you show up when you say you will. I got rid of an old washing machine a few years back. I had responded to a couple of ads in my local paper from people asking for old applicances but in the end, I didn't get rid of it that way as one of the people I called didn't retun my call for over a week (despite my message having said that the machine would be gone by a specific date) and he then got quite agressive and accused me of wasting his time. The other person wanted my to agree to hag on to it for an extra week so he could come out at his conenience to decide wnether he wanted it.
I explained that the company delivering the new machine would be taking the old one so if he wanted it, he neded to come before they did.

I have to admit that it put me off.

Do you see anyone on your local Freecycle giving things away, or you could ask.

  • Shouldn’t post be “where can I get used spares cheap “ If you want set yourself up as re-cycling centre, Get waste remover license etc or under weee agreement all pretty easy to do but cost £££££ * But you can get tripple whammy money from people you collect items from , from eu for what you collect and money from materials you sell? You can go to some foreign countries and buy them as some don’t allow second hand parts to be used in repairs or have no weee agreement etc
The days of picking items up from scrap yards etc have long gone everything now has to have trace-ability stops people nicking manholes, railings etc and selling them Unfortunate for you domestic appliances which again have scrap value fall in same
