Avira - Best free antivirus ? Not sure

Avira is just too aggressive in its upsell these days. Its detection rate is top notch though.
I kind of work on the basis that any piece of software that automatically tried to opt you in to an installation of an ask toolbar and change your search and homepage to ask, is by its very nature unsafe.0 -
For the vast majority of home users any of the top 7 or 8 will be fine and the only differences people will notice is the UI and any nags.
