Beware if switching away from Tesco

Last week, having switched away from Tesco to TSB after a rocky whole 9 weeks as a current account holder where I was just generally less than impressed, I had a nasty shock.

TV Licensing rang me and told me my Direct Debit had not been paid and it was now three days overdue (having been required on the Friday and it was now the Monday).

I checked with TSB and they said that Tesco had not supplied them with anything to do with the TV License. All other direct debits were there, but that was not.

I checked with Tesco, and they confirmed it was a problem they are aware with. Because my TV Licence is a quarterly Direct Debit, and because of the relatively short time I was with them it never got paid under their stewardship. In these circumstances, i.e. where a direct debit is not paid while you are with Tesco, even though when I switched to them, they received that info from my previous bank, it will NOT be passed on to whoever you switch to.

So just watch out.

This ended up not costing me money or anything, but it could have done. So if you have annual/quarterly direct debits - watch out. It is not a one off - they are aware of it, but obviously don't like telling anyone in advance...!

Thanks

Paul

Anything that deprives the BBC of money can only be a positive.

The BBC is a fine organisation that I hope will live on for many decades.

A side issue, but why on earth did you provide TV Licensing with your phone number? As a general rule I don't supply my phone number, landline or mobile, to any organisation now - airlines etc excepted, so they can inform me of delays and so on.

This is a known issue with switching from Tesco Bank. Any DD that has been setup but never had a payment made on it won't get transferred.
It is not a one off - they are aware of it, but obviously don't like telling anyone in advance...!
I can't answer for your transfer but on both the transfers I've done they have phoned me prior to the transfer to advise exactly which DDs would not move so that I could make other arrangements so I think it's untrue to say they don't like telling anyone in advance.

Fortunately almost all on my account were old inactive ones that I didn't need to recreate.

You must be watching a different channel to me. Where's Jackson?

Well, maybe saying they don't like telling "anyone" is a sweeping statement!

However, it's a double failure if they have a hole in their switching process I haven't encountered in any of my other eight account switches, and then they fail to tell me.

If they have a medium to long-term problem with it, the absolute minimum I would expect is that they made me aware of it.

    They flat out didn't.

The purpose of my post was to act as a warning to others as if they didn't tell me, I'm sure it will affect others.

People can at least check as it's not an issue I've seen before. I just expect the bare minimum basic standards in things, so if they can't achieve that I think it is incumbent upon them to be super clear about it from the moment you apply. And they weren't.

I obviously moaned like a drain and got a hatful of ClubCard points - the situation was cleared up very well, but it just shouldn't happen.

Given they've had my number for twelve years and I've not heard a peep out of them until I was watching my telly without a valid licence, I don't think it's much of an issue. I was quite grateful really.

If that detector van had been coming down the street and seen through the wall I was watching Eastenders... It's not worth thinking about. A pretty boy like me wouldn't last five minutes in prison :)
