I was on a flight with Ryanair which was cancelled due to a French air traffic controllers strike. The flight was paid for using an AMEX card. Ryanair refunded the cost of the flight but refused any additional costs. Can I make a claim on AMEX for these costs (booking another flight, train journey) which had to be incurred to get back to the UK & home.

You could sue the French Air Traffic Controllers.

I fail to see how a S75 claim is possible in this situation. What about your travel insurance?

Do Ryanair not owe you a compensation?

If you're delayed by more than three hours or your flight's cancelled, under EU rule 261/2004 you are often entitled to between £90 and £450 in compensation

I am not sure that strikes are covered.

ATC strikes are extraordinary circumstances so do not fall under 261/2004
