"Robert Peston Goes Shopping"

Just a heads-up. Interesting looking programme on BBC 2 just about to start (18.00 hrs).

Robert Peston reveals how shopping in Britain was transformed over the 20th century. This episode charts how shopping was transformed from a chore to be endured in the 1950s into our favourite pastime by the 1980s. Robert also tells the story behind innovative retailers such as Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury's, Asda, Chelsea Girl and Next which revolutionised the way retail was done - and encouraged us to fall in love with shopping.

I hate shopping. No matter how many shops there are, they've never got what you want.

Shopping is still a chore to be endured for me. It's never been my favourite pastime, and I really don't understand where the pleasure is.

I hate it too... walking around dodging dawdling snails and dribbling chavs and smoke and stinky cars.. At least online I can find what I want whenever I want.. no crowds, no idiots, no walking, no noise or stinks and with a cuppa in hand when I want one without having to fork out £9,000 for the privilege.

I went actual shopping once this year.. in August.. first time in maybe 3 years... hopefully it will be longer before I go again!

  • I would rather stick pins in my eyes than go shopping, but it's a lovely romp down memory lane at the moment!

  • They said people queued up outside Chelsea girl and that you dont see that now.
well, I dont remember any queues for shops in the seventies apart from when the bread strike was on, but any weekend you can see huge queues outside certain "designer" shops in the Trafford centre and Cheshire oaks outlet. (I have no idea why)

I hate shopping too - except for food shopping! now THAT is a pleasure thanks to Aldee! 35 minutes and my shopping is done! no huge queues at the checkout, and I do enjoy meal planning as i walk around seeing what's on offer or finding bargains. That includes travel time - I have been known to do a main shop in Ten minutes if OH has been called into work as we get to shop!
oh and I do enjoy trawling the Charity shops.

I love shopping but due to budgetary limits have had to restrict it to Aldi and Charity shops only.

There are granted several annoyances while shopping. Such as people, usually in the way and CS sorting their stuff into colours instead of size. (It makes my blood boil as I shop by size first.)

Thanks for the heads up LD ;)

I love these sorts of programs that show how things have changed, it was a joy to see the way we shopped at the beginning of the show. Shopping then was for necessity not entertainment and I would love to turn the clock back!

    For a 'non-shopper' it was bliss :D
