Due to the different ports used for each activity. web surfing tends to be predominantly port 80, 8080 & 443 and iplayer for example uses port 1935

I would think that they filter for the standard web ports and if not those then they charge the higher rate. Catches all the games, VPN and everything else at the higher rate

Is there any way you could override the default port usage, so you could route, say, gaming traffic over port 80 to make it look like web traffic?

If you disconnect from the network, delete your cookies/cache, change MAC address, and then re-connect (using DHCP to assign a new IP address)... couldn't you get an unlimited number of free 15-minute sessions?

AFAIK Gaming tends to use multiple ports at both TCP and UDP so you couldn't really route over a single TCP port. Also the ports tend to be hard-coded into the game

See http://bandwidthcontroller.com/applicationPorts.html for the ports used by some of the most common games

  • Changing the MAC address would probably work. Don't think you can override the ports locally, besides, it's probably all going through a proxy anyway so they could block whatever sites they want.
  • Ok thanks all
