New boiler costs

  • £2800 seems steep to me. I had an Ideal Logic 24 fitted for £1500. Not quite as good a boiler as a Logic 30 (£100 cheaper?) but came with the same 7-year warranty and there was similar work involved e.g. remove old boiler, hot water tank etc. and system clean. Took one guy a couple of days.

I had the choice between this and a non-combi, I don't understand why a combi would be the only option.

If you google Ideal Logic 30 you'll see that you can get one for about £750 so they're basically charging £2000 to fit it.

I repeat, you need to ask all three why they said a combi was the only option, when it clearly is not. On that basis alone I would be looking for other installers. The odds on 3 independent RGI's proposing exactly the same install are very long...and even more so when it's an Ideal.
The rating on your conventional boiler is not comparable to a combi, as combi's are rated based on the maximum hot water output, which has to be much greater than the maximum CH output.

We've had a response from the one we've had a formal quote, only verbal and ill defined from the other two.

He's happy to do a conventional boiler apparently with the same work in terms of tank replacement but the cost would be the same.

The lack of vat registration suggests that they might not do many full installations, though they've serviced our boiler a couple of times and have been fine.

Looking out for more quotes but it's a slightly odd situation.

a conventional boiler doesn't need a tank replacement

apart from possibly a bit more wiring, it's a far simpler job than a ripout, so the costs and time should reduce accordingly - 1-2 days if you're flushing everything.

I am actually waiting for the old cylinder to die, so I can upgrade to a solar compatible thermal store. This would allow the connection of a solar panel to heat the hot water, as well as allow mains pressure hot water.

If you do replace the old cylinder, it's an excellent opportunity to put in a water catch pan in case of cylinder leak. There used to be a ready made plastic one for sale, but I can't seem to find it by searching any more.
  • If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Right, we've gone and had a few more quotes but only a couple have responded properly so far.

Best of the bunch is a guy quoting a baxi solo 24 system boiler £1890 or a Worcester 24i system boiler at £1995. This includes all work and supply, removal etc and installing new radiator thermostatic valves. This seems reasonable, probably two days work including a magnetic filter.

Both options have five year parts and labour warranty, any opinions or preferences on the boiler?

Does the five year warranty require an annual service/inspection?

Not a bad thing, just something to budget for.

what was the problem with corrosion, and how does a co detector address it? If it's working, safe, and the heat exchanger is solid, why replace it. old boilers are a simple design, and tend to be resilient as a result.

do the quotes (vat?) include power flush and paperwork, if not, wave bye bye to the warranty
