Barclaycard Initial - £20 Cashback

A family member signed up for a Barclaycard Initial credit card a couple of months ago.

There was a promotion (still available) to receive £20 cashback after 3 months.

The T&C's are here: http://www.barclaycard.co.uk/personal/initial-access-cashback-terms

She was only planning on keeping this card for emergencies and therefore not spending on it.

Does anyone know if a single purchase on this card (and paying it off) meet the requirements ? - or would a purchase need to have been made each month ?

Thanks in advance

"You make a purchase with your card in the first three months"

No way can this mean a compulsory purchase every month, but what's wrong with using the card for spending, paying the balance in full every month and taking advantage of up to ~55 days interest-free period on purchases?

ETA: "The cashback refund will be credited to your credit card account within 35 days of making your third on time payment".

I think this clause can be used as an excuse for refusing the cashback if three payments were not made. The only ways to make three payments is either to use it every month and pay in full or use in the first month and make small payments thus incurring interest.

Also, two times they repeat "you make your minimum payments " that is very confusing. Do they really mean that you get £20 only if you make minimum payments, not at least minimum?

Thanks for your reply. That does clears things up a little.

As it hasn't been used and has been held for two months I don't think she is going to be able to get this now :(
  • I take it that if you make a purchase within the first 3 months, and at "least" make the minimum repayment you qualify for the cashback. Buy 1 item, pay it off £20 is in the bank.:money:

Yes, but it mentions having made three payments - so not entirely sure.

it looks more than a little to me.

But then the last condition isn't met ?

The T&C were possibly written by some poorly educated idiot that are common everywhere, including banks. What s/he wrote isn't necessarily what s/he meant. Trying to make sense from them is like looking for a black cat in a dark room in which there is no cat.

I agree that for such small and simple offer it makes no sense to stipulate and enforce such a nonsensical condition as minimum payments. "Third payment" makes a little more sense, but if it really was an idiot, s/he possibly meant just timing, not the number of payments.
