New SIM in mobile probs - what have I missed..?

Lost my (payg) Tesco mobile, so requested a replacement SIM , and got a spare handset unlocked, all seemed fine to start- calls in/out OK, but no web..
OK, so I did a data bundle topup, but now nothing connecting - no web access, and network selection (of all the ones tried) get the same message on screen-
"Your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network"(btw, Tesco not shown in this list at any time, but read on..)
Have now contacted Tesco THREE times, and apart from the usual 'switch it off and on' again, they seem perplexed too.. so ANOTHER SIM is on way..
They supposedly 'reset' something the first two times (checked IMEI, SIM barcode etc), but no joy.
SO FRUSTRATING- both for the lack of a usable phone, and the hassle getting sorted..
Cannot afford a new one, until payday!

It might be that Tesco don't "support" the spare handset you're using, and this can mean the SIM either can't receive, or can't correctly interpret the internet settings when they're sent.
I had the same situation with Lyca and the BlackBerry. I found the solution was to temporarily put the SIM in a handset they did support, whereupon it received and activated all the settings without issue, then restore the SIM back to the BlackBerry where all continued to work fine.0 -
I had to replace my daughters phone with a new one, but using the same SIM, got a cheap handset from Aldi. Calls etc all worked fine but no internet.
Used these instructions (for Android) and all works fine now,

My spare (HTC Wilfire) phone works fine with my wifi- ironically also with tesco.. public wifi also okbreathe in, breathe out- You're alive! Everything else is a bonus, right? RIGHT??0

Have you tried actually going into a Tesco that has a phone dept. My local one was really a fantastic help to my friend when she had problems with her phone. A very knowledgeable young chap spent a lot of time sorting out her phone/sim - and this was after she couldn't get it resolved with tech support over the phone.0
