Can anyone help?

I'm looking to travel to London on 25th November for a few nights for my wife's 40th birthday. I'm travelling by train to Kings Cross, and thought about staying close to here. I read somewhere though, that this wasn't a particularly nice area. Can anyone recommend a decent hotel and area that's pretty central.
