However, in the ops case, unless he quits his job, he can't not pay. They are deducting it from source. It's like saying he should stop paying his income tax.
And if he does quit his job, he's in a worse state. He'll likely face JSA sanctions, so will have to survive on housing benefit alone. there is scope to negotiate the period over which the arrears are paid off, But I would recommend getting some specialist debt advice to assist with this. Try and find out what the ongoing charge will be without the arrears and start to pay that - that bit is non negitiable.0
