CASHPOINT fraud and how it works...

  • We've had a lot of false fronts being attached to bank machines here. I once inputted my card into one of these and luckily for me it must have been full of cards or something as it failed to grab it properly. As a precaution I still cancelled the card.
So whenever I can I take cash out from inside the bank or get cashback at the supermarket.

  • I once bought a cash register from a closed down department store, that must have been at least 10 years old. I managed to open the bottom part (where the money goes) and found a large bundle of card receipts - complete with ALL card details and signatures for all the cardholders.

When I had my bank account scammed, I was fortunate that the bank got onto it pretty quick, they refunded my losses and replaced my card. The frightening point was how it got scammed.

It still baffles me but I was informed this scam was done using a discarded till receipt (it turned out to be from a shoe shop in Blackpool), where I purchased an item and paid by card, my discarded receipt was used (I still have no idea how).

Ever since, I am always aware of my till receipts when paying via card, I make sure I completely destroy them rather than haphazardly throw them away. My tip on this thread would be for members to be aware of discarding any till receipts when paying by card, ensuring they are rendered unreadable.

The person most probably got hold of the shop's copy of the card receipt, which has the full number + expiry date printed on it. I personally burn my old receipts, makes them pretty much unreadable

Most reciepts do not have full card numbers, they miss out at least 4 numbers.
